EMPIRE STATE BUILDING SET TO LIGHT IN WU-TANG COLORS AND MAYOR ERIC ADAMS PROCLAIMS NOVEMBER 9 “WU-TANG DAY” AS NYC CELEBRATES THE ICONIC GROUP’S 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF DEBUT ALBUM – ENTER THE WU-TANG (36 CHAMBERS)
On November 9, New York City will celebrate RZA and the Wu-Tang Clan with the lighting of the Empire State Building in Wu’s iconic black and yellow colors to commemorate their historic milestone– the 30th anniversary of the classic 1993 debut, ‘Enter the Wu-Tang’ (36 Chambers). New York City Mayor Eric Adams will also mark the occasion by declaring November 9th “Wu-Tang Day” in New York City.
Exploding on the scene with their seminal debut album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) on Nov. 9, 1993, the collective of rappers, RZA, GZA, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killa, Inspectah Deck, U-God and Masta Killa, changed Hip-Hop forever. Cappadonna would later become an official member of the group. Wu-Tang’s stratospheric influence has spanned the globe through music, clothing lines, films, publishing, video games, and production companies. They were pioneers in creating their own fashion line Wu Wear, which is globally recognizable. Their massive success in leveraging the Wu-Tang brand into myriad commercial opportunities that expanded their business empire, opened the doors for future generations of Hip-Hop entrepreneurs. They have released 7 studio albums, gold and platinum, with worldwide sales of more than 40 million albums and launched prolific solo careers.
Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) has become one of the most highly acclaimed albums in Hip-Hop history, reached platinum status within a year of its release and is now triple-platinum. Last year, the album was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Only 25 albums are selected each year to be included in the Library of Congress. Last year, the album was also ranked number 8 in Rolling Stone’s list of the 200 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums of All Time. And In 2021, it was ranked number 27 in Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. 30 years on and Wu-Tang Clan continues to inspire other artists, the borough and state which birthed them, and the entire globe.
