Born in Queens in 1926 and still swinging, Tony Bennett takes on a song as if he's giving it a firm handshake, just making a warm and direct connection. Though he had his first hits as a pop crooner, he decided to put jazz at the core of his music, enduring through eras in which he has been seen as hip, passe and then very cool again. The secret of spanning collaborators from Count Basie to Lady Gaga? "I never sing a song that's badly written," he explains. This shot of Tony in flight, taken in December 1957 at a nightclub in Miami, is part of a marvelous new book called KEEPING TIME: THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF DON HUNSTEIN: INSIDE THE UNSEEN ARCHIVE OF COLUMBIA RECORDS, recently published by Insight Editions.
