Shattering all expectations, Vs., the first Pearl Jam album helmed by producer Brendan O'Brien, rolled into its first of five weeks atop the Billboard 200 at #1 with the highest first week's sales (more than 950,000 copies) in music history; a record it would hold for the next five years.

Pearl Jam 20
In 1991, Pearl Jam's debut album Ten catapulted the little-known Seattle-based band into superstardom. Nine studio albums, hundreds of unique live performances and nearly 300 concert bootleg releases later, the band continue to be critically acclaimed and commercially successful -- with over 60 million albums sold worldwide. Over the past twenty years, the band has remained a major force in rock and roll, as much for its aggressive loyalty to its social and political principles and restless experimentation as for its rock radio staples and bestselling albums.

2011 will be a yearlong celebration of Pearl Jam’s rich twenty-year history. The anniversary festivities kicked off with the release of a new live compilation album, Live on Ten Legs, in January, followed by the March expanded reissues of Vs. and Vitalogy. Late summer brings a Pearl Jam 20th anniversary destination weekend bash followed by the fall release of Cameron Crowe’s film, Pearl Jam Twenty, along with an accompanying book and soundtrack album. Interspersed between these PJ20 highlights will be a number of additional special events and new, unexpected releases. For the latest Pearl Jam happenings, visit www.pearljam.com.

NEW YORK TIMES
Pearl Jam Plans Elaborate Reissues Of Two Albums
By REUTERS
Filed at 12:20 a.m. ET
NEW YORK (Billboard) - It's going to be a busy year, Pearl Jam fans.
As part of the band's 20th anniversary celebration which also includes a Cameron Crowe-directed documentary and accompanying book, and a mini-festival, Pearl Jam is re-releasing its early albums "Vs." and "Vitalogy" in four special expanded editions due on March 29.

The albums, released through Sony Music's Legacy Recordings heritage division, are available for preorder at PearlJam.com.

All versions will include the original albums in remastered form as well as a number of bonus tracks and other goodies.

The Definitive Legacy Edition of 1993's "Vs." -- the band's seven-times platinum second album -- adds a previously unreleased acoustic version of "Hold On," and studio outtake "Cready Stomp," and a cover of Victoria Williams' "Crazy Mary."

The Definitive Legacy version of 1994's "Vitalogy" throws in previously unreleased studio versions of favorites "Better Man," "Corduroy" and a demo version of "Nothingman." Both are available as 180 gram vinyl ($19.98 - $24.98) or CD ($9.98).

Upping the ante, the Deluxe Editions of each album ($29.98) include everything from the Legacy versions plus "Live At The Orpheum Theater, Boston," a recording of the band's April 12, 1994 show which featured a set list compiled by the crew.

And for the die-hard fans, there is the 5LP, 3 CD, 1 Cassette Limited Edition Collector's Edition version ($150).
Similar to the massive 2009 collectors' edition of debut album "Ten," the new set includes the Definitive Editions of "Vs." and "Vitalogy" along with remastered vinyl versions of both albums, a vinyl version of the 1994 Boston show, a cassette of highlights from Pearl Jam's 1995 national "Monkeywrench Radio" broadcast, a notebook full of photos and artwork created by frontman Eddie Vedder and bassist Jeff Ament, plus an envelope full of posters and other memorabilia.

A fourth version of each album -- the remastered version of each album on vinyl -- becomes available on April 12 in honor of Record Store Day.

Pearl Jam's year-long celebration of their 20th anniversary will kick-off on March 29th with the re-release of 1993's Vs. and 1994's Vitalogy as expanded editions. The discs will be released separately as well as part of a three-disc box set.

"When we put out the Ten box set a few years ago we had enough content to justify the cost of a box set," Pearl Jam's manager Kelly Curtis tells Rolling Stone. "We didn't have enough content this time, so we put the two albums together so there's value for the fans."

The Vs. deluxe editions will contain a remastered version of the 1993 disc, alongside a previously unreleased acoustic version of "Hold On," a cover of Victoria Williams' "Crazy Mary" (with Williams on backing vocals) and the previously unreleased outtake "Cready Stomp."

"The first two weeks we were making Vs. we were pretty cranked up and we were writing music faster than Ed could write lyrics," says Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament. "That was a pretty solid piece of music that Ed didn't get to. Mike McCready came up with the riff. It's a powerhouse song that showcases Dave Abbruzzese on drums quite a bit."

Vitalogy's new editions will include a guitar/organ mix of "Betterman," an alternate take of "Corduroy" and an unreleased demo of "Nothingman" with Richard Stuverud on drums. "After the huge success of Ten we definitely felt pressure when making the follow-ups, particularly Ed," says Ament. "We were grounded enough to know that Ten wasn't our best work. That took some of the pressure off. I don't think we were as worried about selling records as making really good music." The box set will also have a recording of Pearl Jam's April 12th, 1994 gig at Boston's Orpheum Theater – a fan favorite.

Fans willing to shell out big bucks will have the option of buying a limited edition version of the set with five LPs, three CDs, one cassette, an 80-page composition notebook and a memorabilia-filled envelope. In addition to both albums on vinyl and the 1994 Boston show, the set has a cassette of a January 8th, 1995 broadcast from Pearl Jam's Monkeywrench/Self-Pollution radio series. "That was a little pirate radio station that we set up in a van on tour," says Ament. "It was just a way to play with our friends, but we recorded all of it on 24-track so we have great versions of all the songs we did."

Finally, vinyl editions of Vs. and Vitalogy will be sold exclusively at independent record stores on April 12th, four days before Record Store Day.

The band's 20th anniversary celebration will continue with the release of Cameron Crowe's Pearl Jam documentary Twenty and an accompanying soundtrack and book in the fall. Around that time the band will play a "weekend bash" somewhere in the middle of the country. "We've been talking about doing something like this for a long time," says Ament. "We hope to have it locked down pretty soon so we can start asking our friends if they want to play a couple of shows with us. It if winds up being a two-day thing we'll probably play both days. It's in the infancy stages right now."

Plans beyond the festival are unclear. "All I know for sure is that we have most of the summer off," says Ament. "The idea was to maybe play a few shows after that."
