Legacy Song of the Day - Tony Bennet "Steppin' Out With My Baby"

Tuesday, May 25, 2010
Good luck has charmed the life of Tony Bennett without visits to Hollywood or prison. Bennett’s jazz career does take us to the “outer boroughs” of New York City. He’s from Queens, but it was in the Bronx in the late 1940s, at the Club 845, that he made his first forays into the higher levels of jazz. He would ask George Kelly-once the house tenor at the legendary Savoy Ballroom-to let him sit in with Fats Navarro in Lucille Dixon’s band, and soon people like Stan Getz, Bill Evans and Jo Jones would be allowed in on Bennett’s sessions, as he was a superstar before he left his heart in San Francisco. Stars can go dark, though, and Bennett’s career seemed headed back to the outer boroughs when an appearance on a quirky-named TV show led to him scoring an album of the year with MTV Unplugged.
