If a band like The Chambers Bros. opened the door for Sly with their combination of rock, gospel, soul and psychedelic, then Sly & The Family Stone took it two steps further for what was to come later with George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic and Prince. Another S.F. Area-based group, they were formed by DJ-turned-producer-turned-artist Sylvester “Sly” Stewart-a dream conglomeration of musicians that could deliver on his visionary blend of rock and soul. “I Want To Take You Higher,” with its multiple meaning and uplifting, racial and musical barrier-shattering vibe, did just that.
