Legacy Song of the Day - Pearl Jam "Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town"
Thursday, May 6, 2010
When the Seattle grunge sound took over the top of the charts in 1991, two bands led the way, Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but Pearl Jam did not come out of nowhere. Members of the band had been in two previous mainstays of the great Seattle scene: Green Day and Mother Love Bone. The inventive tunings and intertwining guitar play of Stone Gossard and Mike McCready literally set the tone for the intensely personal lyric content and mega-impassioned vocals of charismatic lead singer Eddie Vedder. “Elderly Woman Behind The Counter Of A Small Town", the longest title in the Pearl Jam catalog, shows what a powerful force the combination of inventive music, a great vocal performance, and a deeply affecting tale can be.
