From The Archives: This is almost as far back as we can go. This item dates from 1890, and it’s a small pamphlet that identifies the names of the songs performed by the U.S. Marine Band, led by John Philip Sousa, at their engagement at the White House in November of that year. (The lucky president? The big-bearded Benjamin Harrison.) Sousa, who died on today’s date in 1932 at 78, had that year recorded performances of these songs for Columbia Records: these were the first ever sound recordings of music made for the commercial public. #legacyrecordings #sonymusic #marineband #columbiarecords @columbiarecords via Instagram http://ift.tt/1eRyTzK
