Miles' influence and impact, however, are still alive and as powerful as ever: Sony Music is currently celebrating the 40th anniversary of the release of "Bitches Brew" with a lavish box set tribute. Today's featured album is an earlier landmark: 1967's "Nefertiti," which was recorded with Miles' legendary "second quintet," and was the artist's final fully acoustic album.

On June 6, 2010, Marvin Isley of died at the age of 56 in Chicago of as-yet-undisclosed causes.

Marvin Isley is the youngest of brothers in the group called The Isley Brothers, as well as a bass guitarist. Before Marvin joined the band in 1973, the Isley Brothers were hard-touring soul legends. Their 1959 rave-up "Shout" first propelled them on to AM radio, and their next big hit, 1962's "Twist and Shout" sold three million copies and was famously covered by the Beatles.

It's been thirty-six years since the passing of Duke Ellington. In 1974, the legendary jazz artist, Duke died of lung cancer and pneumonia, a month after his 75th birthday.

Edward Kennedy Ellington was born April 29, 1899 in Washington, DC. Duke was a winner of twelve Grammy Awards. In addition, his recordings were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, which is a special Grammy award established in 1973.

Lena Horne, born in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, smashed racial barriers to become a Broadway and Hollywood superstar. Horne was active from 1933–2000.
