Miles Davis was one of the most innovative, influential and respected figures in the history of music. He has been described as "one of the great innovators in jazz". The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll notes that "Davis was the most widely recognized jazz musician of his era, an outspoken social critic and an arbiter of style-in attitude and fashion-as well as music". His album Kind of Blue is the best-selling album in the history of jazz. Davis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.

May 26: Along with Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis is the world's most recognizable icon of jazz. Miles, who was born 85 years ago today, began his Columbia Records career when he was about thirty, and remained as the label's top jazz artist for another thirty years. Today's portrait of Miles dates from 1967 and era of his second great quintet, which featured Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter: the photo was used as the cover image for the classic 1968 release "Nefertiti."

Revered lifestyle magazine Esquire named the top 50 most stylish male musicians of the past 50 years. No surprise, a number of Legacy Recordings artists appeared on the list. Bob Dylan even took the crown as the #1 most stylish male musician of the past half century. Additionally, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Miles Davis, Marvin Gaye, David Bowie, Run DMC, and many others also made this list. Go figure.

Miles' influence and impact, however, are still alive and as powerful as ever: Sony Music is currently celebrating the 40th anniversary of the release of "Bitches Brew" with a lavish box set tribute. Today's featured album is an earlier landmark: 1967's "Nefertiti," which was recorded with Miles' legendary "second quintet," and was the artist's final fully acoustic album.

This coming Sunday, July 18th, marks the 50th anniversary of the Columbia Records release of "Sketches Of Spain," one of the highlights of Miles Davis' career and modern jazz in general. On this classic record, his first after "Kind Of Blue," Miles and producer/arranger Gil Evans crafted a beautiful and passionate evocation of the music and traditions of Spain. The album's cover is also a true classic: it features the first appearance of the silhouette logo which would become the ultimate trademark of the artist.
