“Sanctuary” provided a sanctuary for Bitches Brew listeners from Miles’ older tribe. It was more of a piece, a genuine tune, rather than the excursions in new sounds the other works offered. Indeed, “Sanctuary,” which offers the most recognizable snatch of theme from that album, is perceived by many fans as its “title track.” People hear it and say “Yeah, Bitches Brew.” It also provided a lot of the trumpeter-leader and the flavor, or even more, of Miles Davis’ last non-electric efforts.
