Long acknowledged by fans and fellow jazz players, alike, as among the elite on his instrument, guitarist Benson (b. 1943) is a virtuoso whose six-string flights not only summon the spirit of the great Charlie Christian but expand on that tradition, taking it into the worlds of post-bop and the blues-and-gospel based "soul jazz." But he's also a globally-popular vocalist, blessed with matinee-idol good looks, whose silken tenor stylings have taken tunes like "This Masquerade," "On Broadway," and "Give Me The Night" to the upper reaches of the pop charts. Spanning the years 1963 (when he was an up-and-coming sideman with organist Brother Jack McDuff's burning band) to 1980 (as part of an all-star group supporting tenor sax giant Dexter Gordon), The Essential George Benson encapsulates on two discs Benson's remarkable career. He's heard with small groups and large ensembles, live and in-studio, as brilliant soloist and winning singer, in jazz and pop settings, and as leader or featured player with Miles Davis, Stanley Turrentine, Tony Williams, and Dexter Gordon. Culled from the catalogues of several record labels (such as Columbia, CTI, Warner Bros., and Prestige), this 21-song package spotlights "Breezin'" (the title track of Benson's number-one album from 1976), "White Rabbit," and "Take Five," but it also has such Benson burners as "Clockwise," and Miles Davis' "So What," plus the aforementioned hits "This Masquerade" and "On Broadway." In addition to all of this great music is new track-by-track commentary by George himself. George Jones- 16 Biggest Hits George Jones has been called "The Rolls Royce of Country Music" and has more than 160 chart singles to his name from 1955 to date. He's won numerous awards (CMA, Grammy and more), sold millions of records, and influenced country singers over four decades. Listen to the hits on this collection and you'll know why.
