The classic Victor-era band and the Quartet are seen in an out-take scene from Hollywood Hotel playing a medley of “I’ve Got a Heartful of Music,” “Avalon,” and “House Hop.” Goodman’s charismatic stars, trumpeter Harry James and drummer Gene Krupa, are both quite visible, as are Quartet members Lionel Hampton and Teddy Wilson. “I Know That You Know,” done by a new Quintet, and “One O’clock Jump,” performed by the Orchestra, both come from the 1942 film The Powers Girl. “Roll ’Em,” from the same film, features the orchestra on the Mary Lou Williams classic and a “jitterbug” dance sequence. One of the great pieces of Goodman footage is the magnificent “Why Don’t You Do Right?” sung by a young Peggy Lee in Stage Door Canteen. Jess Stacy—back with Benny after a stint with Bob Crosby—is visible at the piano, and trumpeter Lee Castle kicks off “Bugle Call Rag,” from the same film. “The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise” is taken from a 1960 Ed Sullivan Show performance and features Red Norvo on the vibes. Footage from a 1966 Belgian jazz festival rounds out this collection showing Goodman—almost 30 years after Hollywood Hotel—still playing, still experimenting, and still swinging.
