A native of Goldsboro, NC, and the son of a pastor, fresh-faced Christian pop singer Warren Barfield first picked up the guitar when he was eight years old, influenced by his musical family and the local church where his relatives led the weekly worship services. After high school and in his early twenties, Barfield began playing for various youth groups and church events, eventually recording two indie projects that caught the attention of Nashville executives.
