Mr. Mister

A product of the L.A. session-musician community (which also produced the harder-rocking Toto), Mr. Mister enjoyed a brief but massive burst of popularity during the mid-'80s, crafting an atmospheric, vaguely progressive variation on slick, radio-ready pop/rock. While they disappeared almost as quickly as they arrived on the scene, their two number one hits, "Broken Wings" and "Kyrie," remain enduring classics of '80s mainstream pop.

On one occasion, as a music voeuntelr at Trillium Hospital Longterm/ Rehab Facility, I was playing some showtunes in the common room, letting the sounds drift along the hall, when I saw a very distraught gentleman in a wheelchair go past the door several times. He then turned around and came into the room where I was playing a tune Stranger in Paradise', a tune from Kismet'. He was in tears, but managed to tell me (his speech was hesitant since he had had a stoke) that he had not heard that song since he left his home in Pakistan years ago. Apparently he was involved in music theatre there and had sung the lead in that show, loving all the music very much. So we sang that song over and over, and as he sang, he became more alert, calmer and very happy to comply with the nurses' suggestions for therapy and exercise. His health improved steadily as we sang together each week, and he eventually left the facility. This was a wonderful experience for me, too.
