Etta James

Few R&B singers have endured tragic travails on the monumental level that Etta James has and remain on earth to talk about it. The lady's no shrinking violet; her autobiography, -Rage to Survive, describes her past (including numerous drug addictions) in sordid detail.

I would like to make a comment in regards to a song performed by Mrs. James.

The song I'm referring to is "At Last". IMHO, this is one of the finest songs ever to exit the mouth of a human being. Maybe THE finest!! And let me tell you why I feel this way. In my opinion you need to have 5 things happen at once, come together at once in order to produce something truly beautiful in the form of a song.

1. You need to have the right words.
2. You need to have the right music.
3. You need the right person (vocals, voice, range etc).
3. You need the person singing the song to have the passion required to make the listener BELIEVE!
5. And last but not least, you need the right atmosphere (recording studio, engineers, producers etc).

In the case of "At Last"..it all came together baby! What a great song. Thank You Mrs. James and all concerned.

I want Etta to know that I fell in love with her one day while I was at a Border's bookstore. I still love her to this very day. XOXOXO.

Etta: I cried the first time I heard you sing. It was "At last". I was a punk kid and had acquired a pile of 3" CD's. I threw yours in not knowing what I was to hear. The tears in my eyes just would not stop. You are are truly touched by our maker, and I thank him for allowing you to cross through my life.

Love,

Chris

I read that you have not been feeling well. I hope that has changed and that you are up and around knocking people dead with your AMAZING voice againg soon! I admit that the first time that I heard your voice was at a wedding while "At Last" was played as the newly married couple danced around the floor to your rich, wonderful tones! AND I am happy to say that it was that same song that has helped my 18 year old daughter to aspire to a career as a professional entertainer! Since the age of 4 she has been on stages all over the South, and sometimes she is asked to perform your song. She is an Honors student in High School, just competed for and MADE Oklahoma's All-State Mixed Choir, and has taken 3 years of University Music courses while in High School. She also has been chosen by Northeastern State University to be in their "Stars In The Summer" series since the age of 14, being the youngest full-time vocalist they have had, it being a University themed show. So, in closing I want to know that you can make differences without even knowing. Get well soon, and if you get around to it you can visit her @ www.pattieclay.com . She has 2 songs there out of one of the shows that she was in. All of the best to you. Dawn Clay

Life Changing Music is right! Thank you, thank you Etta James for sharing your stunning, amazing gift with the world. Your voice to me is the essence of the Blues, which to me is synonymous with Emotional Truth through Music.

Like most people, I'd heard (and loved) "At Last" when I was younger. So, in a sense I can't say I didn't know your music. However, I didn't REALLY know your music until I stumbled upon a CD of yours at my Local Library. I almost fell out of my seat when I heard the raw, incomparable POWER of your voice. As the saying goes, I could listen to you sing the phone book and I would be moved.

Well, unfortunately, I doubt you probably read any comments posted on this website about you. But, in that remote chance that you do, I genuinely want to express my deep gratitude to you for being so emotionally courageous in sharing your unbelievable, legendary artistry with music lovers throughout the world. We (and I) are SOOO much the better for it. THANK YOU.
