October 14: Happy 36th birthday greetings go out today to Dixie Chicks frontwoman Natalie Maines. Natalie joined the Chicks a little while before the release of their first album, 1997's "Wide Open Spaces": that record went on to sell 12 million copies in the U.S. alone.

Their “overnight” success story has the usual ten-years-in-the-making plot: Sisters Emily Erwin and Martie Seidel began performing in Dallas in 1989, and had worked through a number of lineups when Natalie Maines (daughter of noted steel guitarist Lloyd Maines) joined them in 1995.
