October 14: Happy 36th birthday greetings go out today to Dixie Chicks frontwoman Natalie Maines. Natalie joined the Chicks a little while before the release of their first album, 1997's "Wide Open Spaces": that record went on to sell 12 million copies in the U.S. alone.

Lest there be any doubt that country music enters the new millennium in capable young hands, we end with one of the freshest acts around-the Dixie Chicks. Their “overnight” success story has the usual ten-years-in-the-making plot: Sisters Emily Erwin and Martie Seidel began performing in Dallas in 1989, and had worked through a number of lineups when Natalie Maines (daughter of noted steel guitarist Lloyd Maines) joined them in 1995.
