Legacy Song of the Day - Bob Dylan "Lay, Lady, Lay"

Friday, November 5, 2010
Box sets have been around as long as there have been records to put in a box. But the "box set" as we know it, the career-spanning CD retrospective that tidily sums up the life's work of a great artist or genre, didn't happen until the release of today's item. Bob Dylan's Biograph, which was issued by Columbia Records twenty-five years ago today, is the granddaddy of all boxes: its combination of beloved tracks and unreleased masterpieces made it an instant classic, and it remains a strong seller to this day.

Legacy Song of the Day - Bob Dylan "Highway 61 Revisited"

Take a gander at one of those "Top Albums Of All Time" lists that turn up periodically in your favorite music magazine and at or near the top will without question be Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited. Today is the 45th anniversary of the Columbia Records release of that titanic LP: it is not an exaggeration to state that not just popular music but popular culture itself hasn't been the same since.

Legacy Song of the Day - Bob Dylan "Love Sick"

Tuesday, August 3, 2010
It wasn’t really planned this way, but it seems very fitting that the artist who opened this collection should also close it. After all, more than 30 years on, The Icon is still turning out some of the most powerful and influential songwriting around. Think about the politics expressed in many of the songs in this collection. Now think about who kicked open the door. “Love Sick” comes from the Grammy Award-winning Time Out Of Mind, an album considered by many to be among the greatest of this amazing artist’s remarkable career.

Legacy Song of the Day - Bob Dylan "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)"

Tuesday, July 20, 2010
“How many roads?” Just turned 21 a couple months before this track from his second album was recorded, Bob Dylan was still a well-kept secret, the private property of so few folk purists that his debut LP (released March ’62) did not even chart. That would all change for the Bard of Hibbing by the summer of 1963, when the eleven self-penned songs on Freewheelin’ exploded all preconceptions of what a modern folk singer’s role could be.

Legacy Song of the Day - Bob Dylan "Like A Rolling Stone"

Tuesday, May 11, 2010
Recorded in New York in June, 1965, and on the charts a month later, this record changed everything. The electric side of Dylan’s Bringing It All Back Home, it turned out, was but a tease compared to this crashing, tumbling torrent. The Byrds’ “Mr. Tambourine Man” had a new, exhilarating lilt to it, but it was compact and neat: this sprawled all over the place.
